This album was 90% recorded in my basement on an 8-track. It's true! Lots of bouncing of tracks. Everything was done there except the lead vocals. We took that part to DLS Studios - David Lange Studios. Special thanks go to co-producer Tom Frodsham, and Bob Boeck, Martin Audio.
The GUEST MUSICIANS on Too Long Away are: Dan Mohler- bass, Chris Nickels - guitar and vocals, and Patrick McCabe - slide guitar on Too Long Away. more info on these people here.
You don't need a lot of Expensive Gear to make a simple recording. An SM58, an Alesis HR16B drum machine, the first Yamaha DX7 and an inexpensive Peavey Patriot guitar is all I had. Oh yeah, I had an old beat up Takamine acoustic (still have it). This guitar was given to me by the illustrious Joan (smoooooth) Stockinger. It was given to her by somebody famous in Hollywood, but we can't remember who. That's how famous they were. Anyway, that's the only acoustic I had and still use. Can't afford anything better.
We threw all this stuff on a Fostex 8-track using quarter inch tape. Fortunately, my bassist Dan Mohler, had killer gear as well as guitarist Chris Nickels and Pat McCabe. The rest of the album is me noodling around as an amateur. I'm still an amatuer, but I can do a couple more tricks now. I'll never be proficient and I don't want to be. I like a certain amount of slop in my recordings. My ear is probably the best gear I have anyway.
Having said that, "Too Long Away" comes across pretty well polished for a basement tape, but that ain't me . . . that's David Lange and Bob Boeck coming through.
Recording Trick I learned from David Lange:I've gotten lots of positive feedback on my backing vocals. I consider them a texture in themselves and like to use them that way. David taught me early on to double everything and throw them on left and right tracks. I still use this trick on everything. But I have modified it somewhat to fit my taste. I always add some effect to a background vocal (not so on a lead vocal) and I rarely use the same effect twice. And I do some other freaky stuff, but I'm not going to give my producing tricks away!
I'll Add More Nerdy Recording Info as I Remember It.
Re-Tread was done entirely by throwing old ADAT tracks onto Pro-Tools. That's why it's called Re-tread. The songs are eclectic; without rhyme or reason, which is just how it is when you have ADD. Still Baby Blue Harley and Born This Way stand out as decent songs no matter how bad you try to wreck them.
